Italian through Music (Fridays, 10:30am - 12:30pm) - REGISTRATION CLOSED

From January 22, 10:30 am until March 26, 12:30 pm

The "Italian through Music" beginner-level course taught by Claudia Zanella and offered by ItalCultura, is aimed at both music lovers and professional musicians. The course's design is based on the understanding of librettos as well as on the language skills of our standard A1.1 Italian language and grammar course for beginners, while highlighting the phonetic aspects of the Italian language. During the lessons, we will watch arias from a wide variety of Italian operas and composers from the 17th to the 19th centuries, focusing on those, whose music and the lyrics of their libretto, still hold a great fascination for professionals and amateurs of the genre. This Italian course provides a harmonious combination of communication, grammar and music in a relaxing, interactive and engaging environment.

In this beginner-level course students will learn basic grammar through the analysis and translation of famous arias. For example, students will learn the verb "essere" through the study of Rodolfo (Puccini's La Boheme) and numbers with penniless and witty Leporello (from Mozart's Don Giovanni). In addition, they will have the opportunity to listen to the most famous interpretations of those arias and discuss their favorite ones. Particular attention will be given to phonetics, through the use of the booklet for the pronunciation. They'll also make virtual visits to the most beautiful and prestigious theaters in the world, starting, of course, with La Scala Theater. They'll also have the opportunity for a Q&A session with Carol Cook, principal viola of Lyric Opera of Chicago. The following textbook will be used as well, L’italiano nell’aria 1. Corso d’italiano per cantanti lirici e amanti dell’opera by Donatella Brioschi.

Claudia Zanella has taught Italian for more than a decade in different language schools, including ItalCultura, DePaul University and Columbia College. Born in Milan, Italy, Claudia has two passions in her life: literature and music. Growing up in the capital city of music, as a child, she studied ballet and piano and regularly attended the La Scala Theater with her parents. Now she continues to study piano, taking lessons privately. Claudia has also collaborated with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as she translated the PR material of the 2020 European tour. Her translation has been selected for publication on the CSO website. As Lyric Opera of Chicago has cancelled this season, Claudia hopes to continue to talk about the operas she loves with like-minded people and with anyone who wants to learn more about them.
